Classic vs. volume lash extensions: how to choose

Lash extensions come in two main styles, classic and volume, plus a hybrid of the two. They can look similar in photos, but the technique and the result are quite different. Here is how to decide.

Classic lash extensions

With classic lashes, one extension is attached to one natural lash. The effect is clean and defined, a lot like perfectly applied mascara. Classic sets suit people who already have a good number of healthy natural lashes and want a polished look that still reads as natural.

Volume lash extensions

Volume lashes use handmade fans: several ultra-fine extensions joined at the base and attached to a single natural lash. Because each extension is so light, a fan can weigh about the same as one classic lash. The result is softer, fuller and more dimensional.

Volume is a great choice if your natural lashes are fine, sparse or have gaps, since the fans fill space that classic lashes can't.

Hybrid sets

A hybrid mixes classic lashes and volume fans. It gives texture, with defined spikes and soft fullness, and is popular for a “my lashes, but better” look.

How to choose

• You want natural definition: start with classic.
• Your lashes are fine or sparse: volume will look fuller without overloading them.
• You like texture: ask for a hybrid.
• You're not sure: book a set and let your artist map it to your eyes at the start of the appointment.

Does lash health depend on the style?

Both styles are safe when each extension or fan is isolated to a single natural lash and sized to what that lash can carry. Damage comes from lashes that are too heavy, lashes glued together or picking at extensions at home.

How long does each last?
