How each one works

Acrylic is made by mixing a liquid monomer with a polymer powder. The mixture is shaped into a nail and hardens in the air within minutes. Hard gel is a thick gel sculpted onto a form or tip and cured under a UV/LED lamp, so the technician has time to perfect the shape before it sets.

Strength and flexibility

Acrylic is very hard and rigid. That makes it tough, but a sharp knock can crack it or lift it along with a layer of natural nail. Hard gel is strong with a touch of flexibility, which helps it absorb everyday impact.

Weight and feel

Hard gel can be built thinner while staying strong, so extensions feel lighter and look more like natural nails. Acrylic sets often need more bulk for the same strength.

Finish

Hard gel is non-porous and naturally glossy, and it resists yellowing and staining. Acrylic is porous and relies on a top coat for shine.

Odor

The liquid monomer in acrylic has a strong, distinctive smell. Hard gel has very little odor, which makes for a much calmer appointment.

Removal

Acrylic can be soaked off in acetone. Hard gel doesn't dissolve and is filed down with an e-file. Either way, removal should be done by a professional. Peeling or prying extensions off is what really damages natural nails.

How long do they last?

Both last around three to four weeks before the growth needs attention. How well a set wears depends more on the quality of prep and application than on the product itself.
