Lash lift vs. lash extensions: which is right for you?

Both treatments promise lashes that look great without mascara, but they get there in very different ways. A lash lift enhances what you already have. Extensions add what you don't.
What a lash lift does
A lash lift reshapes your natural lashes, curling them upward from the root over a soft silicone shield. It is usually paired with a tint that darkens lashes from base to tip. The result lasts six to eight weeks, until your lashes naturally grow out and shed.
What lash extensions do
Extensions are individual synthetic lashes, or fans of ultra-fine lashes, attached one by one to your natural lashes. They add length, curl and fullness that your own lashes don't have, and they are customized to your eye shape.
Side by side
- Look: a lift is natural and fresh; extensions range from natural to full glam.
- Maintenance: a lift needs nothing after the first 24 hours; extensions need daily cleansing and a fill every two to three weeks.
- Time in the chair: about an hour for a lift, two hours or more for a full set of extensions.
- Lifestyle: a lift is ideal for swimmers, athletes and eye-rubbers; extensions need gentler handling.
Choose a lash lift if…
Your natural lashes are reasonably long but point straight or downward, you want the lowest-maintenance option, or you would like to try something subtle first.
Choose extensions if…
Your natural lashes are short or sparse, you want visible length and volume, or you love a defined, finished look every day.
Can you have both?
Not at the same time, since extensions are applied to straight, untreated lashes. Many clients alternate: extensions for a season or a special occasion, then a lash lift for a lighter routine.
